How To Stop A Runaway Car - from Edmunds.com

Posted on February 16, 2012 in Safety

We all like to think of ourselves as cool and collected during emergency situations.  Good preparation goes a long way to making your reactions more predictable and more in line with the cool-collected continuum rather than the screaming-and-freaking-out continuum.

Edmunds offers some sound advice, starting with....

Don't Panic. Remember the secret to learning to fly is to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

The Edmunds article has some good photos to illustrate the simple procedure to stop a vehicle with a stuck accelerator.

Here's hoping you never need to use the procedure.

Driving In Foggy Conditions: Can You See Me Now?

Posted on January 22, 2012 in Safety

Strolling through the fog shrouded streets of Casablanca may be exciting but driving through the fog covered streets of Rockville is another matter.  I know we've all heard, read and seen fog safety tips a million times.  So consider this a million + 1.  Remember:

  • Slow down.  Only drive as fast as you can see.
  • Pay attention to your speedometer.  Close-in fog can create the illusion that you are going slower than you actually are.
  • Low beams only.  Fog is a cloud of water drops and high beams just reflect off the water making your vision worse.
  • Roll down your window to listen for traffic you may not be able to see.
  • Use the right side of the road and/or painted lines as a guide.
  • Turn off the cruise control.
  • Signal early and leave plenty of room for braking.
  • If you must pull over, turn on your hazards and keep your foot OFF the brake.  People tend to track brake lights in the fog.

And remember,  we'll always have Paris.

See you on the road.

Aging Cars and Saving Money

Posted on January 17, 2012 in Articles

Our cars are aging, too.  According to Polk - the world wide automotive research firm - the average age of a US passenger cars and light truck is now 10.8 years.    In a story published Tuesday 17 January,  Polk recounts the increasing age of vehicles on the road.    The story has two interesting charts detailing registrations by vehicle year and type of vehicle registration (car or light truck) by vehicle year.

Leading the increase are light truck owners; the average age increased from 10.1 years to 10.4 years, according to Polk.  Passenger car age increased as well, but just slightly from 11.0 years to 11.1 years.

What does this mean for you?  MemberCar can be a very real asset in your financial plan to save money.  Aging cars use more parts and require more frequent maintenance while simultaneously saving you a monthly car payment (or large expenditure from savings/investments for a purchase).  MemberCar will save you money.  I see it every day.  Really.  Each day we save someone money.  And, last time I checked, keeping more of your money was a good thing.

See you on the road.
