Driving In Foggy Conditions: Can You See Me Now?

Posted on January 22, 2012 in Safety

Strolling through the fog shrouded streets of Casablanca may be exciting but driving through the fog covered streets of Rockville is another matter.  I know we've all heard, read and seen fog safety tips a million times.  So consider this a million + 1.  Remember:

  • Slow down.  Only drive as fast as you can see.
  • Pay attention to your speedometer.  Close-in fog can create the illusion that you are going slower than you actually are.
  • Low beams only.  Fog is a cloud of water drops and high beams just reflect off the water making your vision worse.
  • Roll down your window to listen for traffic you may not be able to see.
  • Use the right side of the road and/or painted lines as a guide.
  • Turn off the cruise control.
  • Signal early and leave plenty of room for braking.
  • If you must pull over, turn on your hazards and keep your foot OFF the brake.  People tend to track brake lights in the fog.

And remember,  we'll always have Paris.

See you on the road.

Daniel
